When Thomas Jefferson first drafted the Declaration of Independence, the famous text included the line, “We hold these truths to be sacred and undeniable…” When Jefferson asked Ben Franklin to edit the document, Franklin made a number of minor edits, but most famously crossed out “sacred and undeniable” and changed it to “self-evident.” Franklin’s genius edit helps to solidify “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” as obvious truths for all of mankind!
